Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.

Author Guidelines

All submissions should be made through Online Submission system adopted by the Journal of Health Informatics.

The JHI accepts submissions in Portuguese, English and Spanish.

Journal of Health Informatics does not charge fees for submission, processing and/or publication of articles.

Prior your submission, we strongly recommend the reading of the guidelines adopted by JHI. Those guidelines are similar to those currently adopted by scientific journals. The guide for authors are structured as follows:

General Considerations

The Journal of Health Informatics has adopted the guidelines of the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE). Below, some of the important issues are highlighted. Visit http://www.icmje.org for more details.

Authorship

To qualify as an author, one should have made substantial contributions to all of the following:

a) the conception and design of the study, or acquisition of data, or analysis and interpretation of data;

b) drafting the article or revising it critically for important intellectual content;

c) final approval of the version to be submitted. Note that all authors should qualify for authorship and all that qualify should be authors.

Acknowledgements


All contributors who do not meet the criteria for authorship as defined above should be listed in an acknowledgements section. Authors should disclose whether they had any writing assistance and identify the entity that paid for this assistance. Financial support like grants should also be mentioned in the acknowledgements section.

The Journal Sections

The Journal of Health Informatics, publishes the following types of contributions: Original Article, Review, Technical Report, and Letter to the Editor.

Structure of Manuscripts

All manuscripts, except letters to the editor, should have the following structure:
- Metadata page (title, author's names and institution, structured abstract, including key words);
- Body of the manuscript;
- Authors contributions;
- Acknowledgements (if applicable);
- Statement on conflicts of interest (if applicable);
- References;
- Appendices and Supplementary Data (if applicable)

Manuscripts not conforming to this structure may be returned to author without prejudice but without review.

Title Page

The metadata page should include the title of the manuscript, the authors of the manuscript with their affiliation, (it is not necessary to mention titles and position) the name and full address and contact details (phone and email) of the corresponding author; abstract and keywords.

Information about Abstract and Keywords
A structured abstract accurate and concisely describes the purpose, the methods, the results and conclusions of the study in the paper. The abstract is limited to 200 words. Bellow the abstract present a list of at least three keywords. The keywords should be according to the colection of MeSH, published by the US National Library of Medicine (http:// nlm.nih.gov/mesh/meshome.html).

Body of the Manuscript

The paper will begin on the third page of the typescript. It must present Introduction, Methods, Results and Discussion, and Conclusion.

References

Each bibliographic reference should be identified in the text by a number in square brackets (e.g. (3)) in order of appearance and be listed in numerical order at the end of the typescript. The referencing style as used by the Vancouver Style are preferred (see http://nlm.nih.gov/bsd/uniform_requirements.html for examples) Abbreviations for journals are those used in MeSH published by the US National Library of Medicine.
References to electronic documents that can be found on the internet should be accompanied by their URL, and the date of the last visit.

Appendices and Supplementary Data

Appendices as tables or graphic material not able to be included in the body of the manuscript should appear after the references. Authors should supply a descriptive caption into the text that a given table or graphic is in the appendice.The JHI accepts electronic supplementary material (e-components) to support and enhance the description of your scientific research. Supplementary files offer the author additional possibilities to publish supporting applications, movies, animation sequences, images, background datasets, sound clips, forms, and questionnaires. Since your material will be made available without any further processing, please ensure that data is provided in one of recommended web file formats. Authors should submit the material in electronic format together with the article and supply a concise and descriptive caption for each file.

Format of Submissions 

- Manuscripts must be word-processed (preferably in Microsoft Word format), written in English or portuguese and double spaced with about 2,5 cm margins all around. All pages should be numbered. 
- Measurements and units should be expressed with their exact abbreviations. 
- Abbreviations may be used to replace often occurring phrases, but only when the abbreviation as such is used in communications in the domain. Abbreviations should be introduced in parentheses when the full phrase is used for the first time in the body of the manuscript. The abbreviation should be used, except in section headings and subheadings where full text is preferred. Abbreviation should not contain periods or intervening space between letters. Avoid using abbreviations in the abstract of the manuscript. 
- All figures and tables, including charts, graphs, photographs, computer printouts and the like must be included in the manuscript at their appropriate place. 
- Tables are consecutively numbered with arabic numerals, figures also with arabic numerals. 
- Each figure and table should be accompanied by a legend that provides sufficient details to understand the figure or table. Any abbreviations in the figure or table should be explained in the legend. Figures submitted must be of sufficient quality for direct reproduction. 
- Computer printouts must be completely legible.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

Note that the submission process is only concluded in the fifth step. When submiting and using system's language in English or Spanish, change the form language to Portuguese.

Original Articles

Manuscripts or contributions that reflect an investigation proceeded.

Review

Manuscripts resulting from interpretative literature review.

Technical Report

Manuscripts that describe technical issues of computing applications or software.

Letter to the Editor

Letter adressed to the editor commenting published matters.
